Study of the influence of strength concrete on columns during the design of a multi-story building

Abstract

This paper has as objective to analyze the influence of compressive strength of concrete in columns during the dimensioning of a multi-story building, making use of CAD/TQS computational tool. The strengths of columns were varied by a ratio of 5 MPa, from 35 MPa to 90 MPa, and the other structural elements remained with strengths of 35 MPa. We analyzed horizontal deformation, stability parameters, optimal sections, as well as quantity take-off and cost estimation for the main materials to be employed (concrete, steel, formworks). The results were satisfactory, since the made a possible reduction of 32% in total column area, as well as a reduction in quantity of materials and, mainly, total construction cost, granting more durability without more expenses and, mainly, without lowering structural safety.
